Elles: Women Artists from the Centre Pompidou, Paris

Now through 1/13/2013
Keyword: Museums Region: Downtown

An exciting and thought provoking exhibition of about 125 works of art by 75 female artists dating from 1909 to 2007 comes to SAM from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, home to the Musee National d'Art Moderne - the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe. This international survey of painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and installation by pioneering women artists includes work by Sonia Delaunay, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Diane Arbus, Marina Abramovic and Louise Bourgeois, as well as under-recognized but original artists Atsuko Tanka, Tania Bruguera and Lucia Moholy, among others. With humor, disdain, sensuality and ambiguity, their works encompass the major movements in modern art - from Cubism, Abstraction, Dada, Surrealism, Conceptual, Institutional Critique, Performance and Installation, to more recent concerns of contemporary artists. Seattle Art Museum is the first venue in the United States to unveil this traveling exhibition.
